I’m still working on a set of quite small canvasses based on some of the greenhouse flowers at Wallington. They relate to this larger Purple Patchwork set of four canvases that is almost complete now.

I’ve discovered that the small ones can be displayed quite successfully in several different ways. I’ve been stacking them one on top of another vertically as well as placing them at slightly different angles in a row side by side. I like the way they catch the light differently that way-though this doesn’t show up well in this photo.

I’ve painted 12 of them now, and most are in purples, greens and greys, so I decided to increase the colour scheme by painting some flowers that were in yellows and orange.

I’m also starting to work on sections of stems and leaves to give variety to the shapes when they are seen in a group.

I began by painting them all the same size (5 inches square) but I’ve started to use a rectangular canvas and to vary the sizes of the canvasses.

Three ladies emailed me for a mixed textile workshop so we chose a date that suited us all and had great fun experimenting with various textile techniques and producing lots of samples.

I was very impressed by the strong individual ideas they each had, especially in their choices of colour for their work.

As well as glues like PVA and bondaweb we used angelina, vanishing plastic  and lots of different types of fabrics, ribbons, beads and sequins, wools and embroidery threads for machine and hand sewing and also an embellisher for felted techniques.

Working to a list of possibilities and demonstrations, the samples were recorded in brief notes in the sketchbooks for future reference.

After our usual lunch of homemade soup and bread in the house, we returned to the studio and made final pieces  using a selection of the techniques and materials that had been sampled in the morning.

At the end of the day there was some discussion about other samples that we could do, so there may be a follow up day to come for some of the ladies who were there.
